Tips on stopping and avoiding chain letters:
- If you receive a message sent by someone you do not know, do not open it!
- If you are sent an email ‘from a friend’ and the subject or title of the message seems out-of-character, dispose of it immediately. It may be a virus or scam. Ask your friend about it later in person to clarify.
- Should you receive and open a chain letter, do not reshare the message. Delete the message immediately and warn your friends about the chain letter should they also receive it.
- Some chain letters will try to cheat you out of your money. THESE SCHEMES ARE ILLEGAL!!! Report it to the authorities immediately so it can be handled as quickly and efficiently as possible, hence reducing the number of people affected and essentially warning other scammers that they too will be caught if they try to perform the scam too.
- Think before you act - always consider the possibility that the offer is false and untrue. Seek advice from friends and family when dealing with financial bribes.
- Use your common sense. Do you think that resharing something is ACTUALLY going to make someone fall in love with you?
